Review of the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro (250ohm) This is my first review, and so I hope that I do well. Please note that all are opinions from a fairly inexperienced head-fi’er (see below for what I have to compare to). I am sixteen, and for the entire review, I am listening to rock.
Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if it's been mentioned, but the core Beyer DT series (770, 880, 990) all seem to benefit from basic mods like putting a layer of felt or paper towel over the driver (beneath the foam disc that comes with the pad).
The Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO and the Beyerdynamic DT 880 PRO are both very good headphones for critical listening, but they have different sound profiles. Both headphones have a bright and clear treble. However, the DT 880 lack bass compared to the DT 990 PRO, which pack a stronger punch. This makes the DT 880 sound brighter compared to the DT 990, which sound boomier. Both headphones also
The DT990 is a bit 'fuller' in sound, the DT880 a bit more 'neutral'. HD560S is not comparable. It is more neutral in the bass but a bit more bright (without a filter) where the DT880/990 are less bright but have this sharpness (without a filter) The HD560S has replaceable cables. Beyer 880 and 990 do not (mine does).
So, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro get a bad rep because they have a "earpiercing" sibilance, according to some. I was worried about that, but at 120 euros, I couldn't do much wrong I thought. And first time open headphones, sounds like a pretty good situation.
Bass. It is punchy and has an impact, while still remaining tight and controlled. It never feels muddy or overblown. Startling clarity with faithful sound reproduction. While not neutral, this headphone will reveal flaws in bad recordings and bit rates, so be mindful. The clarity is definitely there.
Let’s see if the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface can sufficiently power the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro (250 Ohm) headphones. We’ll compare three scenarios to see if the interface works well for these power-hungry headphones. 1) Music Listening. 2) Video Editing. 3) Vocal Monitoring.
For decades professional users all around the world have placed their trust in the beyerdynamic classic range: DT 770/880/990 PRO. These studio headphones boast extremely detailed resolution and very transparent sound. The DT 990 PRO is the range’s open-back model offering impressive spaciousness.
I have just taken delivery of a pair of (used) DT990 250 Ohm Pro's. Just done some comparisons with my Lawton modified Denon D2000's, let me say that the Denon's don't embarrass the DT 990's. Yes the Denon's are better, certainly not a day and night difference. To my hearing only marginally better.

Beyer DT Pros have a very specific old-school charm. The non-detachable cable is one of the downsides of the old-school design, but the fact that they're pretty robust anyway and not especially prone to cable failures (like, say, the original ATH-M50) goes a long way.
